Since its inception, the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) has served as a platform for expressing both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of communities and nations, as well as for articulating identity through visual culture. This presentation will examine Ukraine’s recent history since its entry into the ESC in 2003, exploring how the contest has reflected the socio-political developments that have impacted the country, its citizens, and their cultural legacy.

About the speaker

Dr. Barbara Barreiro León, Lecturer in Film & Visual Culture at the University of Aberdeen, specializes in how media shapes cultural identities, with a focus on the Eurovision Song Contest. Her insights on identity and memory in popular culture have led to appearances on international platforms, including BBC radio, TV, and newspaper reviews.

Guest lecture at the University of Groningen, examining Ukraine’s recent history since its entry into the ESC in 2023. Kateryna Pavlenko (Go_A, ESC 2021) attended as a special guest.
